How many items have you installed in your home, which need at least occasional maintenance? This could be anything from occasionally oiling the item to repainting it to tightening some screws. It all depends on what the actual items are.
Since a loft ladder of any kind is a fairly essential piece of kit for anyone who wants to make use of their loft or attic space, you might expect to have to maintain the loft ladder as well. But you might be surprised to learn this isn’t usually the case.
Loft ladders are designed to be able to handle a person going up and down them whenever required. While it’s important to get the right type of ladder for the amount of use you have in mind, you don’t really need to do much with it once you have installed it.
The main thing to do is to keep an eye on your ladder to ensure it is in full working order. If the hinges start squeaking you can give them a quick spray with WD-40 to get rid of the squeak. Other than that you should find you have to do very little to keep it in excellent condition.
With wooden ladders you should watch out for splinters that may get knocked off at some point. Simply take them off and sand down the offending area so it doesn’t happen again. It’s a good idea to check out the condition of the screws as well, to ensure none of them are starting to work loose. You should only need to do this every now and then.
One thing that is definitely worth noting is the condition of a wooden loft ladder if it happens to be used in an area which experiences a high level of humidity. For example, if your loft ladder is in constant use and it is near the bathroom where you take lots of steamy showers or baths, you might want to keep an eye on the ladder over time. Excess steam could cause the wood to warp, and you would need to treat it to ensure this does not happen.
In short, once you have installed your loft ladder you should only need to perform the occasional check to ensure nothing is wrong with it. Provided you have installed it correctly you shouldn’t have to do much more over its lifetime.
